BURKINA ROAN SAFARIS
Burkina Faso
2005
![]()
Burkina Faso, formerly the French colony of Upper Volta, is located in west Africa, north of Ghana, Ivory Coast and Benin, and bordered on the north by Mali. This is by far the best area in Africa for Roan antelope, where you can expect to see hundreds during even a short safari. Western Savannah Buffalo, Harnessed Bushbuck, Western Hartebeest and Sing Sing Waterbuck are just a few of the exceptional trophies to be found in Burkina Faso. Lion are also abundant in certain areas.
The Sissili and Nazinga hunting areas are located in the south central part of the country, while the vast Konkombori and Singou areas are located in the eastern zone bordering the Pendjari National Park in Benin. Both areas are a three to four hour drive from the capital city of Ouagadougou. Hunting season is generally from mid December through late June, with late December to mid March as prime hunting times, as well as the period after the early rains in mid May.
All hunting is by spot and stalk and tracking. No shooting is permitted from vehicles at any time. You will need to be in decent physical condition, and be able to walk in order to take your game. Trophy quality is very high. During my visit to these areas in late March of 2000, I took nine species, including what would be the new S.C.I. number one Nagor Reedbuck if entered in the current S.C.I. record book.
This current record book lists the following entries from Nazinga: #1 Harnessed Bushbuck, #2 Nagor Reedbuck, #2 Western Hartebeest, #9 Western Bush Duiker. My partner and I saw dozens of Western Roan antelope per day, with many trophy bulls. This being said, the hunting is very challenging and rewarding as you truly "hunt" for each animal you take. Some long shots were necessary, however on average the shots taken were in the 125 yard range. As an example, I took my Roan at approximately 275 yards, however my Bushbuck, Warthog, Reedbuck and Duiker were taken at less than 50 yards. A 375 H&H would be a good choice for this safari, and is required if Buffalo and Lion are on your list. Any .300 or .338 class magnum will be sufficient for all other game.
Flights arrive via Paris in late afternoon, requiring an overnight at a local hotel in Ouagadougou on day one. The following morning, day two, you are driven to the hunting area. Your safari begins on day three. The day after the completion of your safari, you will be driven back to Ouagadougou for your late evening departure to Paris.
